I love this saying. It is not a sad love quote but more of a wise love quote. It is true that humans often muddle up love with possessing, obtaining, having and keeping. We are consumers by nature, and we always want things for ourselves; we see a nice dress and we have to have it, a nice car we dream of owning one, a beautiful house, we work hard to buy it. To love something or someone is to appreciate it as it is, not to possess it. You may love birds, roses, the ocean and you cannot possess any of those. If you love birds, do you lock them up in a cage and claim they are yours. If there is this amazing old treasure do you have to own it to love it? If you love a woman, do you lock her and write your name on her and claim that she is yours? Even if only figuratively speaking, you must not possess the ones you love. Keep them free and they may choose to stay by your side, if that is where they belong, otherwise, you never had them in the first place.
